I’m feeling so…

Bohemian Like You!

I just can’t get this song out of my head! It’s great!

Nowadays, I don’t have any favourite bands anymore because I judge music on the individual song rather than the band as a whole. For example, I love ‘Miss Murder’ by AFI… but I really don’t like any of their other songs.

I don’t especially have favourite songs either… it’s more like ‘the song of the moment’ that I keep listening to. It often really shows my diverse music tastes, especially considering my last SOTM was Slipknot’s ‘Psychosocial’.

So yea… this is my new song I keep listening to. It’s just so catchy with a very ‘feel good’ mood to it. Though I don’t want to listen to any more of The Dandy Warhols’ music because it might spoil this one song for me. That’s happened before… I had to take all of my Fountains Of Wayne off my iPod so I could better appreciate ‘Stacy’s Mom’.

That’s all for now… I gotta go to Sixth Form in about 20mins.

No matter how old you are…

September 22, 2008 at 4:21 pm (Random) (, , )

You are never too old for gingerbread men!

My loving mother bought me one from down the road which I appreciate very muchly. They’re just so good! I mean, there’s no other crumbly biscuit snack like it. Sure, you can get ginger biscuits and other gingerbread stuff, but it just never seems as good!

People always seem ashamed to be seen eating a gingerbread man, because they’re associated with kids. I say NO! People should not be ashamed to eat gingerbread men, for they are delicious! It should become a thing like guys wearing pink, it just makes them more manly.

So here is my idea:

Spiderman says 'Eat Gingerbread Men'!

Spiderman says 'Eat Gingerbread Men!'

People will witness my campaign and aspire to be like Spiderman (as all adults secretly do) so they will therefore come out of their Gingerbread closet and eat gingerbread men in public!

So I urge all people to be proud about eating gingerbread men, for there is truly nothing to be ashamed of!

Oh and one last thought: gingerbread women suck… not to be sexist or anything.

Last Night

September 19, 2008 at 5:25 pm (Show) (, , , , , )

My hearing was totally shot, my voice was aching and I was really hot. The prognosis?

A FANTASTIC Nickelback concert!!!!

Yes! They were absolutely brilliant!

The opening act was a band I’d never heard before, ‘Staind’, and it turns out that they were pretty good. They played for about an hour, then there was a break. After about half an hour, most people were back in their places waiting for it to start again when there was a massive BANG! Scared the crap out of loads of people!

Nickelback really know how to put on a damn good show, and not just because of the music! After the explosion there was the sound of a heart beating faster and faster, really building up the excitement! Then as it was at its fastest, there was another BANG and the curtain was taken away to reveal Nickelback who positively EXPLODED into ‘Animals’. I had been thinking that it would be a brilliant opening song, and I was right! It was truly amazing!

Unlike most bands, Nickelback took short breaks in between each song with Chad Kroeger talking to the crowd. He’s a great entertainer as well as musician, really getting involved with the crowd and he obviously loves it too. I mean, who wouldn’t!?

They mixed things up lots! There was a guest member, Timmy, who Kroeger kept shouting about. There was a great drum solo. The lead guitarist sang vocals on one song. They shot free merchandise out of air cannons. They threw beer at the crowd and Kroeger told a couple of bad jokes!

But of course, the main reason you go to see any band live… the music.

It was fantastic! So much better than on the albums! Isn’t it always though, cause every time you listen to a CD, the songs are always exactly the same as the last time you heard it. Live however, your favourite songs are so much better, and even the ones you didn’t like that much before sound great! ‘If Everyone Cared’ was especially great I thought. I love the song to begin with, but they played it soooooo much better on stage!

Even ‘Rockstar’, a song that had started to irritate me lately for being massively overplayed was brilliant on stage! But it’s also interesting that you always know so many more song lyrics when you are at a live gig, cause I swear I didn’t remember knowing all of ‘Animals’ before I went… I don’t even know it all now!

Well, that’s all for now. I’ll keep posted on all shows/gigs I go to.

Bye for now!

GTA IV

September 16, 2008 at 8:23 pm (Review) (, , , )

Well, I have never done many reviews before, mainly because I get bored writing them. But mostly, there are so many better reviewers out there and mine just seem very dull in comparison. Of course I am alluding to Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Crowshaw, the best game reviewer out there! It’s not that he’s a great critic, because the IGN team do a much better job at looking equally at all aspects of the game. It’s just the way he presents himself and his opinions, it’s hilarious!

I however could never match to that level! I shall however try to make my reviews somewhat entertaining.

So, by request, I shall review Grand Theft Auto IV.

Now, first impressions of the game are that it seems very basic, not much better than the previous GTA games. The missions seem very samey and the tutorial aspect is so very obvious! ‘Take Michelle bowling so you can learn how to waste your time doing things that are so dull you end up never calling people and they begin to hate you because of it and then when you find something interesting you want to do with them you get rejected because nobody likes you.’

I mean really! Who would willingly go bowling in a game that is primarily designed so you can shoot anyone you like, steal cars and drive them really fast into stuff and even shoot anyone you like out the window of your car while driving really fast? It’s very very very dull, and takes no skill whatsoever. It may give the game more depth, so people will talk about how advanced it is, but that’s like people on holiday when they say; ‘Oh look, we’ve got a safe in our room, we can put our valuables in there’. Sure, they’ll use that safe once for the novelty value, but after that it just seems rather pointless. At least on holiday you don’t get the receptionist ringing you up asking if you would like to use the safe with her… Okay, bad analogy, but you get what I mean!

However, despite the lack of inspiration at the start, it doesn’t take long to get involved in the game. You get quite hooked mainly because the graphics are brilliant! It’s true, I never found interest in the GTA Vice City or San Andreas storylines because I didn’t like the graphics. The light especially, it was basically an experiment by the developers to see how realistic they could make it. The result was this: ‘Ooh that’s nice, it actually looks like a real sunset… shame I can’t see where I’m FUCKING GOING!’ You don’t get this in GTA IV though, they’ve obviously worked long and hard on things like that and produced a bloody lovely looking game!

Now, back to the storyline… You start off doing odd missions for random people just for money really. However, there later comes a mission that sparks off a big blood feud and Niko (the protagonist… probably should’ve mentioned this stuff earlier) sets out for vengeance, very dramatic like. Now, I haven’t completed the storyline yet, but I’m sure Niko get’s revenge and all works out well in the end…

It is a good storyline indeed, especially for this type of game where the player is totally free to choose what they do and where they go, but I have never felt properly engaged with the story. It’s all fine that lots of shocking/tragic/emotional things happen, but you never really feel as if you’re part of that experience. Probably because you spend the entire game hiding behind the cold hearted Niko Bellic, war veteran. He has no emotions whatsoever and doesn’t act as a regular human would.

This is why I often prefer the storylines of FPS games because you are actually put into the game rather than some character you control. I loved the storyline of Call of Duty 4! You feel real anger towards the antagonist, and at the end… let’s just say it gets rather emotional. I just feel rather empty playing GTA IV, I mean sure it’s fun, but I still long for the delicious soup of morality, topped with little croutons of consequence, served with a little dish of conscience… I think I’ve played that metaphor far enough now, and I think I’ve made my point clear.

Now, the reason I haven’t completed the game is because sometimes I just prefer to do the side missions. Some people would spit on this mad idea with disgust, sometimes however, it’s just nice to do some easy missions and take it easy for a while.

Now, of course if I’m talking about GTA, I can’t forget Sandboxing! I personally don’t think that sandboxing in GTA IV is as good as in the previous games. Now, many will dispute this, but I have my reasons:

Firstly, and I think this is my main concern… you can’t fly planes in GTA IV! Flying planes was one of my favourite things in San Andreas! Especially flying really dangerously, which I was actually pretty good at, but even if I crashed I could jump out with a parachute, which brings me to my second point…

There are no parachutes! What am I supposed to do when I helicopter my way up a really high building, but then fall off a ledge… I can’t spawn another, there’s no room. No room for a car either! I need a parachute to carry me safely to the ground!

I thinkapart from these issues, the sandboxing is as good as any other GTA game… well, it’s far better of course because of the advanced programming, but it’s all very similar anyway. The physics engine however is another issue… many people have complained about being flung out of a car windscreen, however this is not my problem, I personally love when that happens! I just imagine Niko shouting ‘For Justice!’ just before he bloodies up his face by eating pavement. No, the cars are not my problem… the bikes are.

I love riding motorbikes in games, it’s so much more fun than cars. However it always turns out that the steering is dodgy or something. That is less of a problem because I feel that you just have to find the right bike to ride on (the Zombie is my favourite). I just hate however when you’re riding, especially on a mission, and you bump into something solid you’ll be flung over the handle bars and end up really far from your sorry looking bike. It takes you time to run back over to get on the bike, but even then it takes just as long to pick it up and get on! By this time, you have undoubtedly failed the mission you were on!

If I were to make this into a metaphor, it would go something like this: ‘It’s like riding your favourite rollercoaster to work, it’s really good fun when it’s working well and going very fast, but as soon as you hit anything you are flung out from your seat and land several hundred feet away. By the time you get back in, you are undoubtedly late for work… also you’ll probably have some serious injuries…’ Although speaking of serious injuries, you often seem to be able to withstand some serious head/concrete smashing just by holding onto the handles of a motorbike!

Now, as for cheats… I haven’t experimented with this cheats in this game very much. Well, I only use the cheats for a car or a helicopter, which is quite often. But those are the only ones! I refuse to use a health/armour/weapons cheat. I wanted to play this game as legitimately as possible. And in actual fact, it doesn’t take too long to attain a full arsenal of weapons on your own, and as soon as you do the bank job you become totally loaded, so money isn’t an issue!

I don’t really have much else to say except that it is a very good game despite it’s minor flaws. Personally, it’s not my favourite kind of game, I’m more of a nerdy RPG type, but I have to say that GTA IV is a very fun game to play. Slightly frustrating at times… especially with bike chases, but enjoyable nonetheless, you get quite a good feel of accomplishment from it.

Overall, I give it 9/10. Excellent game, but not perfect.

Well…

September 15, 2008 at 4:49 pm (Current Affairs) (, , , )

Today’s the day!

However I haven’t seen or heard anything about the apology which sucks. Hopefully the Church will follow through though and make their apology to Mr. Darwin. I really did want to see it, maybe on the news or something, but in the instance that I never got to see it, I created what I think probably happened…

Many many 'Awesome High Fives' were exchanged.

Many many 'Awesome High Fives' were exchanged.

This clearly shows great cooperation between Religion and Science!

That’s all for now. Until next time…

Sorry Mr. Darwin

September 14, 2008 at 10:37 pm (Current Affairs) (, , , )

Tomorrow will be a good day! Especially since it is not actually me apologizing to the great Charles Darwin, but of course it is the Church! You must know that I am very strongly a man of science and greatly oppose religion, so tomorrow is something to truly relish for me. However, it is of course long overdue, especially considering Darwin died 126 years ago.

The reason for the apology is because of all the harsh words and slander he faced when he first announced his theory, because of course most people were Creationists and very close minded back then. They want to apologise for ‘not fully understanding’ his ideas at first. Basically with all modern science and the substantial amount of evidence pointing towards evolution being fact, the Church has to reassess their views.

To me it seems very hypocritical, if you’re going to follow a religion, you should be in it for the whole honcho! You shouldn’t devote youself to it, but then decide that other ideas might be true too. Here’s an example:

Ever since Christianity began, the story went that God created the universe and everything. There was no disputing this because there was nothing that could prove otherwise. However, then came the Big Bang Theory which seemed extremely plausible. The religious community then suddenly go… ‘Hmm, I guess that could be possible, after all it does explain the expansion of the universe and the huge amount of matter all over the place. But of course, if there was a Big Bang, God started it.’

That’s where my quarrel sprouts from. You can’t just use ‘God did it’ to answer everything science can’t yet explain properly. That’s exactly what the Ancient Greeks did. They saw lightning so they put it down to Zeus throwing lightning bolts in anger, they however had no technology to explain or rationalise the things they saw. They put it down to a greater power, which at the time must’ve seemed very possible for the people. Modern people however cannot choose to ignore scientific discoveries and explanations in the fear that it will compromise the foundations of their religion.

If you do indeed ignore these things, then you are truly ignorant. So, developments like tomorrow give me a greater respect for the Church in that they can accept, or at least try to understand, rational scientific theories.

This links to my previous post in that Sarah Palin, running mate of John McCain, is a die-hard Creationist. This apology will bring up issues for her hopefully. Not to be disrespectful, just that you will have gathered I want Obama to win. Someone in a high political position like herself should not be ignoring convincing scientific theories, it makes me lose confidence in her as a politician. If she can’t accept evolution to be even slightly plausible, I don’t want her helping make decisions about Global Issues or the conflict in the Middle East. Because, seriously, if she is only going to see one theory and not be open to any others, she’s going to be very short sighted and stick with only one solution to problems. This is not good.

Well, I think I’ve said what I wanted here. I’ll probably post a short blog tomorrow having enjoyed the apology. Until then…

Come On! Obama has to start catching up with McCain! He is definitely the best person for the job, and besides, we’ve already had 8 years of Republican leadership!

Well, what do I know anyway, I’m British. It’s just that American politics seems so much more interesting than ours! It’s a really big thing over there what with all the posters, campaigns, rallies etc… All we get is crappy TV adverts every now and then where you’ll get talked at by some stuffy old guy in an cramped office. The biggest thing we’ve had is the London mayoral election, and even then we’ve voted in Boris Johnson… I’m sure he’s good at his job, but he’s also a bumbling fool! He’s so embarassing to watch, especially with the speech he gave after the Olympic Handover thing. Ugh… it’s shameful. Can’t we just get a charismatic, sharp, motivational leader for once?

Anyway… back to America. McCain just doesn’t cut it in relation to what America, nay the world, needs from a leader. Sure he has experience, but it’s not going to do him much good unless we lock him in a Vietnamese prison camp as soon as he’s elected, cause we all know that he’s good at surviving that! We all know that too well… I mean really, come up with a new anecdote for once! Maybe one that can inspire hope in modern society? Maybe one that’s actually relevant to current affairs?

But who am I to be making suggestions for him? If he wants a good suggestion, here: Drop out of the race and Let Obama do his job!

That is the best advice I have to offer. Not that anyone’s going to care what I think…

To finish, I present to you what I found when I searched ‘McCain’ and ‘Obama’ into Google. These are the first images that came up for me…

John McCain / Barack Obama

John McCain / Barack Obama

Now, first impressions… One is a highly respectable Presidential candidate in a casual and friendly pose on an appropriate backdrop, perfectly suited for the White House. The other would be better suited on a large ship sporting an eyepatch and wooden leg.

I’ll leave it to you to decipher which is which…

Bye for now.

Bagelfish

September 10, 2008 at 8:50 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

To clear things up… Bagelfish is not random, it is in fact me having misheard someone saying ‘Babelfish’ the popular internet translator. However, I have adopted it as my alias. So that’s that.

Babelfish was a fantastic internet translator which helped me through my French GSCE… totally legitimately of course… But yea, it was so useful! There was a point where it would translate the phrases literally, but then it got improved and became even better!

There is a reason however that I refer to it in the past tense. It was taken over by Yahoo. This irritates me so much, even if the most-part of my irritation comes from the fact that they changed the picture of the fish! It used to be a brilliant little fish, so awesome and simple…

Babelfish as it should be!

Babelfish as it should be!

Look at him there! So simple, so few pixels, so fantastic!

But alas, this is the monstrosity Yahoo have created:

Ugh...

Ugh...

It’s at least 63,000,000x worse!

I strongly oppose how big companies take over other companies because they want more money! Whatever happened to dignity!? Like how Google took over Youtube! They don’t flaunt it… but that doesn’t change the fact that they have degraded Youtube’s solitary prowess somewhat.

Hmm… maybe Babelfish and Youtube aren’t the best comparisons, they’re not exactly in the same league. It’s kinda like comparing Steven Speilberg to your French teacher…

Oscar Winning Director / French Teacher

Oscar Winning Director / French Teacher

Sorry to you on the right by the way… I just found that picture on Google.

Using pictures of people from a Google search is legal right? I mean, anyone who searches it has access to all the pictures for their own use. Anyway, if you are reading this lady who I used the picture of, feel free to contact me and I’ll change it for somebody else.

Thinking of pictures… I figured out how to change my display picture! Hoorah! However I don’t have any good pictures of myself saved on this computer… so I made one instead. Hope you like it, it’s a fairly accurate representation, although the hair’s a little shorter than in real life.

Well, that’s pretty much all I have to say for now.

Let’s get this started…

September 10, 2008 at 3:49 pm (Uncategorized) ()

Hello people of the internet. I am Bagelfish (not that anybody actually calls me that, I just like to use it as my display name), and this is my page.

This is kind of an introduction to everything, and I just want to say I’ll be writing this blog whenever I feel like it, not on any schedule.

I’ll write about anything I feel like, or anything I think is particularly funny or worth sharing.

This isn’t really to entertain people… it’s more for me to find an outlet for ideas or whatever.

I think that’s gonna be all for now…

Oh yeah, one more thing, I’ll also note the song I’m listening to when I finish writing… for funsies?
